how bout version 2.8 it fixes:

*  Option --owner can be used in copy-out mode, allowing to uniformly override the ownership of the files being added to the archive.
* Bugfixes:
o Symlinks were handled incorrectly in copy-out mode.
o Fix handling of large files.
o Fix setting the file permissions in copy-out mode.
o Fix CAN-2005-1111 http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2005-1111

think one of these was fixed in #174921

cpio-2.8 was just added to the tree, plus any critical bug fixes already exist in cpio-2.7-r2
