i switched my gcc compiler to 4.1.2, ran fix_libtool_files.sh 3.3.6, then ran emerge -e system && emerge -e world.  full log is attached

Most likely out of memory. If it's reproducible every time at *exactly* the same place, then attach the log here or post some link to it.

so memory shouldn't be a problem, right?

Disk space != memory. So, are you really sure you are you out of RAM?
