Description Gerry 2007-06-02 14:44:53 UTC
Using the GTK+ installer of the 2007.0 LiveDVD, standard install, install fails. The installer says I can find the error in /tmp/installer.log.failed, but this file doesn't exist, and the View log button only pops up an empty window that immediately disappears. /tmp/compile_output.log.failed does exist, but this file is 19 megabytes and seems to contain a lot of things that didn't fail as well. It does contain a couple complaints about read-only filesystems, and ends with not being able to download java-config-wrapper-0.12.tar.bz2 from any of the mirrors since it doesn't exist on any of them (wget gets 404 Not Found). It ends with

!!! Couldn't download 'java-config-wrapper-0.12.tar.bz2'. Aborting.

Shouldn't this file be on the DVD, anyway? I didn't select to install any extra packages, just some of the ones that had checkboxes.

Actually, yes, I just checked, and java-config-wrapper-0.12.tar.bz2 is indeed on the DVD, in /mnt/cdrom/distfiles/java-config-wrapper-0.12.tar.bz2. Why doesn't the installer use this file? It doesn't make sense to download this even for non-networkless installs since the file will be the same anyway!

Also, there's no way to continue the install, which, considering the install up to this point took many many hours, I'd also consider a major bug.

Reproducible: Didn't try

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start a standard install
2. Watch it fail the next day
3. Complain at the bugzilla
4. Go have some ice cream and/or chocolate

Actual Results:
No Gentoo.

Expected Results:
Gentoo!

Inability to download files is not the installer's fault. And no, it shouldn't be on the LiveDVD.

You didn't read everything I wrote, did you? It IS on the LiveDVD, but the installer doesn't use it. Also, don't you think it's a little strange that a file that's required by a completely standard install doesn't exist on any of the mirrors?

The problem you are running into is that you are using the portage snapshot from the livecd/dvd and that contains ebuilds that use files that may not be on the mirrors anymore. If you intend to do a standard internet-based installation, you need to do a live emerge sync instead of using the snapshot.

Well, that makes sense; however, shouldn't the installer do this automatically, or at the very least warn about it? I did choose 'standard install', after all, and I never got any questions about which portage snapshot to use. IMO the installer shouldn't shoot itself in the foot like this without any user interaction.

(Also, if the installer is using a portage snapshot from the LiveDVD, shouldn't it also use tarballs from the LiveDVD if possible?)

If you chose Standard, it gave you the choice to use a normal sync, webrsync, or a snasphot.

There aren't any tarballs on the LiveDVD, unless they were added this time without my knowledge (which is entirely possible). Even if there are, they aren't present on the LiveCD, which is the primary media for the installer.

Please don't reopen this bug again.

Oh, so you're calling me a liar, then. I see.

Listen, ignoring issues doesn't make them go away. What's the point of having an installer if it randomly breaks like this, when used normally?

Anyhow, I won't waste my time reporting any more bugs. Perhaps this way you can spend the rest of your time with Gentoo ignorant of any other issues that might pop up. Ignorance is bliss, after all. Lucky you!
