Been using this version since march 22nd 2007 (according to portage). Works fine on amd64.

Nope.  Let the maintainers determine when to stabilize this package.  So long as we have yet another legacy branch I don't want this going stable.  We'll have to see where NVIDIA is going in the future before we touch the stabilization of the package.
