Yes, I have an idea - the part where it breaks for you is extremely memory-intensive. When I just tried to reproduce your problem, my 4 GB box almost started to cry when gcc allocated almost 3 GB (!) non-virtual memory at that point and it swapped like hell. You probably just ran out of memory. Try adding more RAM. :) I'll keep this bug open for now as there might be a dependency missing, too, but that's rather unlikely to be the cause of your problem because it broke much later for me and that was in a minimal testing environment.
This is now fixed in CVS. I've added the missing dependency as well.
