Description paapaa125 2007-05-17 18:49:58 UTC
I'm using ntpd - on a 64-bit system. Everything seems to work fine (except the polling interval first increases from 64 to 128 and maybe to 256 but then goes back to 64. That is not necessarily abnormal.) The output of "ntpdc -c loopinfo" is a bit odd after a while:

offset: 0.002014 s
frequency: 95.548 ppm
poll adjust: 4294967266
watchdog timer: 226 s

"poll adjust" seems to have a signed/unsigned problem. When I start/restart ntpd I get normal values (0, 6, 12...) but after a while I get that large number. I'm not sure if this affects the actual operation of ntpd or is only a cosmetic issue.

Reproducible: Always

What version of ntp are you using? How long time does ntpd have to run before you see this problem? Please also post your emerge --info.

I have just tested against a ntpd (net-misc/ntp-4.2.4-r1) that have been running for about 55 days and it gives normal output.

jonas@obelix ~ $ ntpdc -c loopinfo
offset: 0.000546 s
frequency: -2.077 ppm
poll adjust: 30
watchdog timer: 316 s

You only see it if ntpd thinks the polling interval should be lowered. If you have very good network and very good time source you won't see it most likely ever. I OC quite a bit and that might cause more drifting to my computer clock.

Do you ever see a negative 'poll adjust' value? If you don't then you might see the problem if you tried with worse time sources.

Im using ntpd 4.2.4p0. And it really seems that this is only cosmetic issue - but still a bug. Ntpd seems to work flawlessly AFAICS.

If noone responds I can try to see the sources myself to see if this is just a problem with signedness or something.

I tried to find the problem and basically found it. I reported it upstream:

https://support.ntp.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=886
Comment 4 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2007-10-06 12:22:42 UTC
this will be fixed in the next version, thanks for reporting this upstream !
