In the system profile, ftp and iptables are list to be installed by default. That is an 'emerge world' will ALWAYS show them. I don't need either of them and a default system should not require them. I think the gentoo admins should rethink what packages are in the system profile (/etc/make.profile/). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. emerge world -up 2. 3. Actual Results: [ebuild N ] net-ftp/ftp-0.17-r2 [ebuild N ] net-firewall/iptables-1.2.7a-r3 Expected Results: Remove unnecessary packages from the main /etc/make.profile list.
leaving this unassigned, because I do happen to agree with you on this; but I would like as many of the developers to have a chance to voice.
agreed, add net-misc/dhcpcd.
dhcp pretty much has to stay IMHO as does ftp (they really are base system tools, if you get into the vein of thought of that why not also remove man, less, etc etc.. you dont really need them to run your system either). iptables however I do agree with, and it has been removed (twice cause someone put it back) from the ppc sytem for a long time.
i'd say remove iptables but keep ftp (for the moment)
Ditto here. Not all systems need iptables, but ftp is really one of the most basic packages. It is not even 75kb on my system, and I will look scew at any system's admin if I had to work there and it did not have it installed.
ok, I will remove iptables from the system profiles
removed iptables.
