This seems to be the same bug as 12626 and 17310. I try to emerge ethereal-0.9.10 and its fails with an access violation: --------------------------- ACCESS VIOLATION SUMMARY --------------------------- LOG FILE = "/tmp/sandbox-ethereal-0.9.10-18127.log" open_wr: /usr/share/snmp/mibs/.index open_wr: /usr/share/snmp/mibs/.index -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- These are the use flags I have set: bash-2.05b# emerge -vp ethereal These are the packages that I would merge, in order: Calculating dependencies ...done! [ebuild N ] net-analyzer/ethereal-0.9.10 +gtk +ipv6 +snmp +ssl +gtk2 And the command I used to emerge is "emerge -v ethereal".

I tried installing ethereal-0.9.11, which is ~x86 (unstable). I got the same access violation message. --------------------------- ACCESS VIOLATION SUMMARY --------------------------- LOG FILE = "/tmp/sandbox-ethereal-0.9.11-5316.log" open_wr: /usr/share/snmp/mibs/.index open_wr: /usr/share/snmp/mibs/.index --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just tried 0.9.9. This emerged without any errors.
Happens here as well on a brand new system: Portage 2.0.48 (default-x86-1.4, gcc-3.2.2, glibc-2.3.1-r4) ================================================================= System uname: 2.4.20-xfs i686 Pentium III (Coppermine) GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.oregonstate.edu http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /var/qmail/control /usr/share/config /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/env.d" PORTDIR="/gentoo/portage" DISTDIR="/gentoo/distfiles" PKGDIR="/gentoo/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="" USE="x86 -3dfx -3dnow aalib acl acpi -afs alsa apache2 apm -arts -atlas avi berkdb -bonobo -canna cdr -cjk crypt cups curl -debug dga directfb doc dvb dvd -emacs encode -esd ethereal -ev6 evo fbcon firebird flash freetds -freewnn gb gd gdbm ggi gif -gnome gphoto2 gpm gps gtk gtk2 gtkhtml -guile -icc -icc-pgo imap imlib innodb informix ipv6 java jikes jpeg junit -kde kerberos ladcca lcms ldap -leim libg++ -libgda libwww lirc -maildir -matrox -mbox mcal mikmod -memlimit mmx motif mozilla mpeg mpi -mule mysql nas ncurses nhc98 nls -nocardbus oav oci8 odbc oggvorbis opengl oss pam pcmcia pda pdflib -perl plotutils png pnp postgres prebuilt -python -qt quicktime readline -ruby samba sasl scanner sdl slang slp snmp socks5 spell sse ssl -static svga -tcltk tcpd tetex tiff truetype trusted usb -voodoo3 wavelan wmf X Xaw3d xface xinerama xml xml2 xmms xv -zeo zlib" COMPILER="gcc3" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=pentium3 -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe" CXXFLAGS="-march=pentium3 -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe" ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" MAKEOPTS="-j2" AUTOCLEAN="yes" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" FEATURES="buildpkg ccache sandbox userpriv usersandbox"
should be fixed with latest revision hopefully
