Using binutils-2.17.50.0.15 I get "Error: CFI instruction used without previous .cfi_startproc" errors while 2.17 works fine. Attaching build log.

looks more like glibc is broken, not binutils

Well yes, but something have definitely changed from 2.17 to 2.17.50.0.15 as it works just fine with 2.17. I don't know if 2.17.50.0.15 is just being more strict about some things or not though.

added a fix from upstream glibc which properly enumerates cfi directives

this will be in glibc-2.5-r1

err, sorry, i mean glibc-2.5-r2 ... ill push a few alpha fixes (all compile) into glibc-2.5-r2
