I just went from the last stable version to the current stable version. Nothing changed in my configs except I needed to add moduleload syncprov since previously it had been compiled in. loglevel -1 still just has the basic error.. This issue is actually a configuration issue. I use certs signed by CA Cert. Vapier's bump to ca-certificates the way it works breaks CA Cert signed certificates. Basically their root cert is unavailable. Oddly enough you'd think OpenLDAP would say something like can't find CACert rather then dying with a cryptic error msg..
