Tar's man page is lacking a description of several options that are new since 1.14. Attached patch adds the missing ones. It also puts the options in their correct alphabetical order, removes a duplicated option, and makes several other tweaks. The only options that were left out are --seek and --sparse-version. This also fixes bug #170691 and bug #168555.
Created attachment 118600 [details, diff] adds missing options and tweaks some sentences
Did you send this upstream?
No, I did not send this upstream, as upstream does not contain a man page. :) The man page is Gentoo's.
Any reason why the patch can't be applied?
I would like to see this applied (and it seems more important than "trivial" to me), as well I just wasted a lot of time because the man page claims that "-l" means "--one-file-system" when it does not (maybe it used to).
(In reply to comment #1) > Created an attachment (id=118600) [edit] > adds missing options and tweaks some sentences tar --help shows even more options. For example, "--add-file" and "--anchored" (to start in alphabetical order).
In tar-1.20, '--owner' option is erroneously documented: See http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-tar/2009-07/msg00013.html
ive merged this patch and more ... thanks http://sources.gentoo.org/app-arch/tar/files/tar.1?r1=1.9&r2=1.10
