Bug 176973 – none of these mirrors were working while i tried to install gentoo from a live cd. i know for a fact the network was configured properly and was working during the install. dont take this personally but this installation process is just too complicated...

try now, and make sure you've run emerge --sync as 2.6.17 is quite old so none of the mirrors even that patch now. Use 2007.0.
