In order to use tomcat-native library (http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-5.5-doc/apr.html) (ebuild: dev-java/tomcat-native) I've added JAVA_OPTS="-Djava.library.path=/usr/lib in /etc/conf.d/tomcat-5.5. It should be documented somewhere (in pkg_postinst?).
The best way would probably be to by default define a variable to /etc/conf.d/tomcat-X making java.library.path=/usr/lib and documenting it with a comment saying that it's for finding tomcat.native.
Added comments to conf.d file about tomcat-native usage. Will see about updating Tomcat guides at some point. Although there is still little to no documents for mod_jk/mod_proxy, or etc which are likely wider used than tomcat-native. Will try to document as much as possible as time permits. Closing bug as it should be fixed now. Please comment or re-open if problem remains.
