As reported here (*) net-misc/mDNSResponder-107.6-r2 misses to install mdnsd.

It get's built, but apparently never installed, which makes the init.d services fail (besides that zeroconf obviously wont work anymore):
# /etc/init.d/mDNSResponderPosix start
 * Caching service dependencies ... [ ok ]
 * Starting mdnsd ...
/sbin/start-stop-daemon: stat /usr/sbin/mdnsd: No such file or directory (No such file or directory)
 * Failed to start mdnsd [ !! ]
 * ERROR:  cannot start mDNSResponderPosix as mdnsd could not start
