Don't follow that guide, it is crap.

Remove/revert *everything* that you have done, then simply "emerge vmware-server" *without* the VMware overlay.  That documentation is ancient and has not been updated since VMware Server was put into the tree.  Use the in-tree version unless you are specifically wanting to test changes/features for the VMware team.
