I just built it again (albeit on amd64) with USE=garmin and had no such failure... Portage 2.1.2.4 (default-linux/amd64/2006.1/desktop, gcc-4.1.2, glibc-2.5-r1, 2.6.19.3 x86_64) I'll try it again on a couple of x86 machines here, but I would recommend syncing and trying again. Also, you may have some cruft left over from eselect compiler; check your /etc/env.d/ stuff for left-over or mangled gcc settings, as well as down in /usr/lib/gcc/foo for orphaned gcc binaries. When was the last time you tried the fix_libtool thing or reset your compiler settings with gcc-config?
