According to the xmlGawk site: http://home.vrweb.de/~juergen.kahrs/gawk/XML/
..gentoo used to integrate the xmlpuller extensions. I've checked the CHANGELOG but I can't find any mention of why it was pulled; I'm guessing for unicode. There was a release in 2006-07-09. It uses iconv, so I figure it should be safe?
