Basic problem is that Amanda will do level-0 backups, but fails to estimate level-1+ backups with:
 /bin/tar: Unexpected field value in snapshot file

Probably the easiest solution is to just stable one of the later versions of amanda -- I don't see any outstanding bugs for them at this point.

And we specifically apply a patch to old amanda versions to work with the new tar.
epatch ${FILESDIR}/patch-tar-1.14.90

Please search for old bugs on this matter.

-r4 will be going stable in 2 weeks however.

That's a different bug -- the patch you mention is irrelevant to this bug.  This problem occurs now for amanda-2.4.5 and tar-1.16, which are currently stable.

Resolving WONTFIX on the theory that this will be fixed in two weeks anyway.
