I can't reproduce this myself, chances are could be something to do with the fact that you're using gcc-3.x - could you please see if you still encounter the problems with gcc-4.x (See http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gcc-upgrading.xml for upgrade instructions). If you still encounter the problems with gcc-4.x, feel free to reopen the bug.
