Description Thomas Blomme 2007-04-18 11:09:20 UTC
aMSN 0.96 breaks on my computer at random times, hangs a lot on startup and takes much more time to load than it's previous versions. Any ideas why?

Reproducible: Didn't try

I have noticed the same problem on my Gentoo box,I have a CPU of 800Mhz and 512MB RAM

the problem is unnoticable for many users because there computers are much faster. But my computer really slowed down after the emerge of version 0.96 of amsn. It always uses more than 50% of my CPU. If you compare this with other programs like Firefox and X who only use 20%, there should be a problem.

I'm not sure whether this problem is solved in the new version of amsn, that hasn't been marked stable yet but I'll give it a try. I don't think this is a Gentoo related issue neither, it's probably something that has been changed in the program itself(some new feature which hasn't been properly implemented?)

thomas

They do way too much stuff with a canvas... bad design on their part...

is that still the case in version 0.97
if so, I will switch back to 0.95 or search for an alternative

I odnt see why 0.97 would be better.. you can try pidgin, its very popular
Comment 5 Thomas Blomme 2007-09-06 16:08:28 UTC
I emerged the masked version of amsn 0.97 and the problem is gone there, instead of the +50% CPU it stays behind programs like firefox and X now with only 10%
(I'm lookin at the 'wish' process)

as earlier: the program doesn't use a lot of CPU when you are not logged on, it uses a lot while logging on and loading your contact list, after that it returns to normal. That's the difference with 0.96

so, solution for this bug: upgrade?

thomas

Potentially...
