This is what the docs tell you:
"Z Shell users are in a somewhat worse position -- no parts of the shell have Unicode support, although there is a concerted effort to add multibyte character set support underway at the moment."
The current stable zsh-4.3.2-r2 has full unicode support (available via the unicode use flag).
