Description qfp7f2sownu4rtz 2007-04-17 17:03:06 UTC
An install attempt using the command line installer from livecd-i686-installer-2006.1 ended with the error "EmergePackageError: FATAL: emerge sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.17-r5!" The full message specifically asked for a bug report "if you didn't do something stupid" which is quite insulting. NO ONE would knowingly submit a bug report caused by something stupid they had done. Unless you are very familiar with Gentoo installs, you are not likely to be aware that something you did might be considered stupid by someone with much more exeprience. The message asked for two log files to be included. Some people may submit frivolous or already reported bug reports, but a proper report as requested is quite time consuming, and it is wholly inappropriate to insult the user you're asking to submit the report. I can't be sure this has not been poorly reported but if it has the error message was not included as searched for it as well as some smaller pieces of the message.

Reproducible: Didn't try

Steps to Reproduce:
I haven't tried to reproduce the error but some hours before, another attempted install, this time from the GTK+ installer, ended after 40 minutes with a somewhat similar error message. It was "Install failed!", "Exception received during 'Emerge kernel sources': EmergePackageError: FATAL: emerge: Could not emerge sys apps/pciutils-2.2.0-r1!" I'm including the install log from that install as well.
Actual Results:
Fatal error message.

Expected Results:
Installed Gentoo system.

As requested I'll attempt to attach three large files that are too big for these dialog boxes. The first (4K) is the install profile XML from the install crash being reported. The second (81K) is the install log file, with debug data, from the install crash being reported. The third (3K) is the install log file from the earlier GTK+ install, which may or may not be, but I suspect is, related to the more recent install crash. I have no install profile XML from the earlier crash. If it matters, all times are UTC.

This isn't a bug in the installer. You did a networked install and used the 2006.1 release snapshot, which is over 6 months old at this point. Many of the distfiles no longer exist on the mirrors.
