the offending part seems to be this: The value #\LATIN_CAPITAL_LETTER_A_WITH_TILDE is not of type BASE-CHAR. ... 16: (SB-KERNEL:HAIRY-DATA-VECTOR-SET "GIT_AUTHOR_NAME=Petteri R^@^@^@^@ 25 #\LATIN_CAPITAL_LETTER_A_WITH_TILDE) it seems that a unicode character is getting written into an ascii string either from a file or from an environment variable unfortunately the backtrace is incomplete so I can't figure out what exactly causes this; as a long shot you may try to unset the GIT_AUTHOR_NAME variable in the build environment and grep -R Petteri ${WORKDIR}/contrib before and after the build failure all failures seem to be caused by compiling files auto-generated by sb-grovel

(In reply to comment #3) > (In reply to comment #2) > > > > it seems that a unicode character is getting written into an ascii string > > either from a file or from an environment variable > > > > Yes I do have a couple of utf8 strings in the environment: It is a known problem, unfortunately. The problem is that the build version of the Lisp doesn't have utf8 support in until later in the build. The correct solution is indeed to unset the relevant variables. Sorry.
*** Bug 182202 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
I reproduced with: NONASCII="عرب" emerge -av sbcl I'm thinking it should be possible to filter the environment for such strings until upstream gets their act together. Not sure how exctly yet, maybe export | sed 's#declare -x \([^=]\+\).*#\1#' | xargs unset or something a little bit more sophisticated... there probably is a simpler way to unset everything too.

As a workaround sbcl now builds in a clean environment. Do we have an upstream bug number?
upstream doesn't have bug numbers...
