sys-apps/hal-0.5.7.1-r5 seems to break automount for both KDE and GNOME

When I plug in a USB key, or other media, desktop devices do not appear, and I'm not allowed to mount the device without being root.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge -av sys-apps/hal-0.5.7.1-r5.
2. Add your user to the plugdev group.
3. Make sure hald is added to default run level.
4. Restart hald, logout of any sessions, log back in.
5. Plug in USB key, or similar device that your kernel recognizes.
6. Automounting seems to fail!

Expected Results:
For both KDE and GNOME, icons appear on the desktop, allowing users to browse/copy/etc. No mounting appears to occur, at least on the desktop.

Provide the output of "lshal" with the device plugged in. Also check the settings in GNOME under Removable Drives and Media Preferences.

Lastly, try to reproduce the error with hal 0.5.9
Comment 2 Andrew Novikov 2007-04-23 21:12:53 UTC
I have the same issue. The behavior seems to depend only on the version of running kernel. I use KDE and when running 2.6.18-suspend2-r1 everything works as it supposed to. But when I boot 2.6.20-gentoo-r6 the behavior becomes weird, e.g. when I insert a recorded CD-R into my writer, it is not recognized and doesn't show up on the desktop (while I can mount it with “mount”); but when I insert CD-RW (doesn't matter blank or recorded) it is recognized as usual. USB flash also shows up only under old kernel. Re-emerging hal with new kernel doesn't help. Neither does emerging hal-0.5.9 (which works fine with old kernel). Maybe udev is the clue?

Still waiting on the output of lshal with the media plugged in or inserted with a description of what the media is so I can find it in the log. Please make sure to add it as an attachment and not paste it as a comment.

lshal output for 2.6.18 and 2.6.20 kernels with different configurations

Added output of lshal for 2.6.18 and 2.6.20 kernels.
I forgot to mention that first time I compiled 2.6.20 with libata IDE driver (as e.g. in current Ubuntu). When I recompiled it with old IDE driver, hal began to work normally.
