When using kernel sys-kernel/ck-sources-2.6.20_p1 and gdm attempts to start, it simply continuously restarts X until it gives up with the following message: The display server has been shut down about 6 times in the last 90 seconds. It is likely that something bad is going on. Waiting for 2 minutes before trying again on display :0 This problem does not occur with sys-kernel/ck-sources-2.6.18_p1-r2. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Install sys-kernel/ck-sources-2.6.20_p1 2.Restart computer. Actual Results: X refused to start properly. Expected Results: gdm should have started and prompted for login info. ck-sources is not a supported kernel on Gentoo. If you can reproduce this with a supported one, then reopen. http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-kernel.xml#doc_chap3

I also re-emerged all packages which contain the libraries linked to /usr/bin/Xorg, still fails to work.
Hmm, this may be an evdev-related problem. Which version of evdev are you using? And are you able to reproduce without evdev enabled?

And are you able to reproduce without evdev enabled? > I'm running x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev-1.1.5-r1. How do you disable evdev? I had one hell of a time setting it up a while back (many X crashes), just to allow additional buttons on my mouse to work. I've tried to debug this, and I've found that I could run fluxbox by using xinit. GDM won't work, and xfce4, my default desktop, won't work either. I'm running firefox, so I don't think it's gtk. My additional mouse buttons don't work. After re-emerging with USE="debug" I've purposely crashed X while running it in gdb, but I did not get any extra debug messages. I've also changed my mouse device in Xorg from "/dev/input/event2" to "/dev/input/event0" It's a no-go so far.
(In reply to comment #6) > I'm running x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev-1.1.5-r1. How do you disable evdev? By using a different driver in xorg.conf. Uncomment the line that uses the mouse driver and comment out the line that enables the evdev driver. You might have to change what device the mouse driver is pointed to.
I checked /proc/bus/input/devices and it turns out my mouse is detected as event4 instead of the previous event2. Adjusting xorg.conf fixed the problem! FINALLY!
