I could be wrong about some (all?) of these, but my installation would have gone smoother with the following changes to the docs: 1. In section 7 (Mount Partitions), command "mkdir /mnt/gentoo" fails because the directory already exists. Either this command is not required as of 1.4_rc3 or there is a bug in the installation routine for 1.4_rc3. 2. In section 9 (Unpacking the Stage Tarball), the filename in the tar command is incorrect. The command should read as follows: tar -xvjpf /mnt/cdrom/gentoo/stage?-*.tar.bz2 3. In section 16 (Installing the kernel and a System Logger), the following lines should be moved below code listing 16.3 to prevent users from entering the commands before reading the code listing: # make dep && make clean bzImage modules modules_install # cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot 4. In section 18 (Modifying /etc/fstab for your machine), the instructions should state explicitly that the file should be edited with nano using the "-w" switch. Adding the following example should be sufficient: nano -w /etc/fstab 5. In section 26 (Installation complete), if the user began the installlation from a bootable CD, that CD should be removed once the computer has been restarted. Otherwise, the computer will boot off of the CD again. Thank you for your time! Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce:
Since this bug is open, here are a few more suggested changes. 6. Section 8 states that if the user has the 3 stages live CD, then all they have to do is copy the tarball of their choice to /mnt/gentoo. However, the tar command in code listing 9.1 extracts the tarball directly from the CD. Since it seems a waste of disk space to copy the tarball to /mnt/gentoo if we are going to extract it directly from the CD anyway, perhaps the sentence about copying the tarball in section 8 should be removed. 7. In section 24, code listing 24.6 has a line that reads "root=/dev/hda3", but the last bullet point below the listing reads "root=/dev/hda5". The last bullet point needs to be changed to match code listing 24.6. 8. In section 25, the user should be told to insert a blank diskette into the floppy drive before entering the commands in listings 25.1 or 25.2. Once again, thank you for your time!
Will review and commit required changes.
All these items have been addressed in the upcoming Gentoo 1.4 Installation Guide (bug #25802) which will be uploaded shortly.
The new installation guide has been committed.
Moving these so we can remove the "Install CD" component from "Gentoo Linux". I apologize to everyone for this spam, but according to the bugzilla developers, this is the only reasonable way to do this.
