At the hardware detection insmode via-rhine failed and modprobe failed also. So,
it was not possible for me to use adsl-setup and to get an dsl-connection via
Gentoo 1.4 rc2: no network card.

have you tried 1.4-rc3? 
or the experimentals at www.gentoo.org/~livewire

I have a Via Rhine II. For me, rc2 works. I have tried rc3 and everything at ~livewire, and always get the same message from modprobe:PCI: Unable to reserve I/O region #1: 100@ec00 for device 00:0f.0-Ingvar
