The only way to install 1.4 seems to be from a live filesystem, but since there's no support on the CD for USB CD-ROM drives and my laptop doesn't have any kind of removable drives (except for USB) I can't install Gentoo 1.4. Booting with "gentoo cdcache" does not provide any tools to go further. 1.2 works BTW. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Download and burn gentoo-basic-x86-1.4_rc3.iso. 2. Boot CD with "gentoo cdcache". 3. Poke around and see you're at a dead end ... Actual Results: I gave up and continued to use FreeBSD. :) Expected Results: I would like to see as complete a system in memory as 1.2 had. It worked. My laptop is an IBM ThinkPad X20.
Assigning this to livewire so that he can start looking into USB CD-ROM support in the initrd.
i believe i already have whats needed in latest www.gentoo.org/~livewire , please reply back if it works.
Please reopen if it's still relevant.
Moving these so we can remove the "Install CD" component from "Gentoo Linux". I apologize to everyone for this spam, but according to the bugzilla developers, this is the only reasonable way to do this.
