Aye
Comment 3 Christel Dahlskjaer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-03-22 01:20:30 UTC
Is that an 'aye' as in 'you can have it'? :)
Comment 4 Michael Cummings (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-03-22 12:04:25 UTC
How else will this server be utilized? I don't question the value to SoC, which is fast approaching, I know, but that covers a few months, how else will it be/could it be utilized for the remainder of the year?
Comment 5 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-03-22 15:28:12 UTC
I would like to know what else this would be used for, too. At least possibly and idea of what infrastructure it would provide fro SoC. Would this be the front-end web server? Database (is this even needed)? Repositories?
Comment 6 Paul de Vrieze (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-03-22 16:21:42 UTC
I have three points. First of all, where would it be hosted? If at OSUOSL, have they approved?
Second, indeed the use while the SOC program is not running. Are there possibilities to use it as a backup and build server in the remaining time.
Third, the machine is quite beefy with a quite beefy pricetag. Could you give a more in-depth justification on why this machine is chosen and not a cheaper one. (Choosing for a rack-mountable (or non-brand) system needs no justification for me).

Last year gentoo-infra had to find a box for the projects that students
were doing. Up till about last week genone still was developing his
stats project on an infra box. We had to reclaim that box for our
future mail migration plans effectively having to kick him off with no
place to take his project for further development. (he was a good sport
about it.)

From my POV I see the usefulness of SoC projects having a dedicated box
as being a good thing. It keeps infra and dev boxes clearly separated.
It's really hard to tell what project ideas will be proposed by the
students and devs alike but infra simply has no place for them.
When a project become final it could then be moved to a infra server.

The total funding that the SoC projects brought into the foundation was
almost three times the cost of this server. So that's would be a split
of funds leaving the foundation holding the majority of the net profit
for all of Gentoo.

How will it be used the rest of the year? ie, will it be used to host genone's stats project as well as other dev projects? Just curious - you know from the other bug I'm on the fence here :)

Yes, it would be hosting SoC projects all year round, I also believe we could utilize it for other community related projects (for instance hosting sunrise).

OK, i'm an aye after talking to christel on irc. Pasted below are two comments from christel, pasted with her express permission (just in case anyone wonders). I hadn't realized the genone project in question was in actuality a SoC project (there was a comment somewhere about his project being kicked), or about the requirement for availability past the summer for this work. To quoth:

13:29 @ christel| hehe, ok, as an example, genone was working on his soc project on toucan up until a few weeks back when toucan had to be pulled

13:30 @ christel| we're also obliged to host them and keep them up and public for some time post soc

I still stand on the grounds that I would like to see this hardware utilized more fully, but I also acknowledge that a some form of dedication needs to be made on hardware.
Comment 11 Mike Doty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-03-25 17:33:12 UTC
infra doesn't let spare cycles go to waste. if the box is being under utilizied during non SoC months, we'll use it for other purposes. Having said that, I don't expect it to be uderused much.

As mentioned earlier in the bug, sunrise would go on this box(trac is a hog)
Comment 12 Paul de Vrieze (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-03-25 19:37:11 UTC
Btw. I'd like to give my OK too.
Comment 13 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-06-06 18:49:56 UTC
This should have been ordered now and should be on its way to OSL.
