Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.emerge portage
2.watch screen
3.

Actual Results:
I had a lot of stuff here but the system complains the comments are too long. It wants me to use an attachment but I can't see anywhere to add one. I have the log file and some more information I will be happy to email you.

Expected Results:
portage emerged

I have been trying to install gentoo for a week and a half on two machines but I keep running in to things like this. I just found a windows ssh program sol I can actually login and pull these reports for the first time.

The two machines include a Dell D800 with an Nvida Gforce video 32MB, Broadcom gigabit Ethernet card 1.7Ghx Mobile intel CPU, 40 GB HDD and 512MB RAM aan an AMD +2200 with Via 82x chipset, 160GB HDD, 750MB RAM, ATI MACH68 *MB Video where I installed a Creative 24 sound card because I thought the on board card was kaput.

Both systems are dead at this point.

/usr/portage/eclass/autotools.eclass: line 207: aclocal: command not found

that means you dont have autotools installed

this is most likely because you're not building from a stage3
Comment 2 JohnH 2007-03-05 02:50:58 UTC

I used stage3-i686-2006.1.tar.bz2. If this is not the stage 3 I am supposed to use, where can I find the correct one?

I used the Quick install guide section 2:12
wget http://gentoo.osuosl.org/releases/x86/current/stages/stage3-i686-2006.1.tar.bz2

Comment 3 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2007-03-06 20:33:49 UTC
then you just hit a bad upgrade path or something

your system should not be missing aclocal -> emerge autoconf
