ruby-config (tested with 0.3.2) contains a hardcoded .gz suffix for man pages: | alternatives_makesym \ | /usr/share/man/man1/ruby.1.gz \ | /usr/share/man/man1/ruby{$suf,18,16,19}.1.gz This won't work unless PORTAGE_COMPRESS is set to "gzip" (which is not the default anymore in recent portage). Additionally, if ruby was already installed in the same slot with PORTAGE_COMPRESS=gzip and is now reinstalled with PORTAGE_COMPRESS != gzip, a broken symlink will be lying around. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: (1. Optional: install ruby with PORTAGE_COMPRESS set to "gzip") 2. Install ruby with PORTAGE_COMPRESS not set to "gzip" in fairly recent portage. 3. Missing/broken symlinks to man pages
