Description Philip Walls (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-03-05 07:46:06 UTC
I patched my current kernel (2.4.21-pre5-ac1) using the instructions specified
by the bootsplash-0.4 post_install information.

It claimed to have patched correctly, so I configured the kernel as specified.
(I will attach a copy of my .config)

Now when I run 'splash -s -u 0
/usr/share/bootsplash-0.4/gentoo-console-1024x768.cfg', I get the following error:

/proc/splash: No such file or directory

Also as a sanity check, I attempted to 'cat /proc/splash' which returned the
same error. I've recompiled the kernel on several occasions, and I can't seem to
find the problem, any assistance would be much appreciated!

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge ac-sources (2.4.21_pre5-r1)
2. emerge bootsplash (0.4)
3. Patch, configure, compile, reboot
4. Run 'splash' to set console image

Actual Results:
I got the following error:

/proc/pci: No such file or directory

Expected Results:
1. Immediately return to prompt
2. After switching back and forth between consoles, show new FB console image

Portage 2.0.47-r8 (default-x86-1.4, [unavailable], glibc-2.3.2_pre1-r0)

Kernel config

Here is the kernel config that I used to compile the problematic version of the
kernel. If I have all the proper options, then I believe that this version of
the kernel does not get patched properly.

For reference, here is my gcc version.

Grub Config

And here is my grub configuration

This seems to be only a problem with ac-sources, as I tried with gentoo-sources and had no problem.

Tired of seeing this in my buglist. I've already moved onto a different kernel.
Closing.

Well, gentoo-dev-sources has the problem now. I get that using splash. Unless I've done something wrong. I've followed the hints and tips on the Gentoo forum and it doesn't work. I don't get a bootsplash when I startup, can't get one on the console, and don't get a shutdown one.

Gentoo-dev-sources-2.9 fixes the problem.

gentoo-dev-sources-2.9 ??? Well, it
Comment 9 Roberto P.R. 2004-09-29 08:53:13 UTC
gentoo-dev-sources-2.9 ??? Well, it´s Sep 29 and the last gentoo-dev-sources here is 2.6.8... Am I missing something ? By the way: I´m having the same problem with gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.8... The same "/proc/splash" thing...
Just to let you guys aware of that...
