There have been a few bug reports about apps not starting because they require a session bus to be running and there is none. Most login managers start one for the user, so it usually only happens with people who use startx etc.. While I think it is there responsibility to start session services if they don't use a login manager, there should at least be a small mention of dbus-launch at the end of the ebuild since we only tell them how to start a system bus.

Unfortunatly this doesn't help much but i think it should be added to the ebuild. I had lots of bugs related to banshee because of this until the upstream forced the use of dbus-launch.
