I have UNICODE="yes" in /etc/rc.conf and KEYMAP="fr-latin1" in /etc/conf.d/keymaps. In the raw console (no framebuffer, no X), after the prompt `~ $ ', if I type `é' and then press backspace twice, the prompt becomes `~ $'. If I do that again, it becomes `~ '. In short, I can delete two characters when I type a single character. It only happens with extended symbols (é, è, à, ç, ...). you have to use a unicode compatible map if you want to use the console in unicode mode
Well, I tried fr-latin1, fr-latin9 and fr-pc, and every single one poses the same problem: if I type 3 é, I can delete 6 characters. Which one do I need to use? I have a French AZERTY keyboard (with é and 2 on the same key).
i really have no idea ... i'm not a french user nor am i a unicode user please ask on the gentoo forums and/or french gentoo users mailing list
