if already exist /tmp/fail2ban.sock (default setting in /etc/fail2ban/fail2ban.conf) the deamon can't start. Removing it before starting the deamon fix the problem. If the system halt suddenly (damn blackout!) at the follows reboot it will not start. (maybe my temp isn't cleaned correctly...)
thanks, we added the support for command-line arguments like "-x" in /etc/conf.d/fail2ban in 0.7.6-r1. Indeed, you can make /tmp a tmpfs which will go to /dev/null at reboot :)
