Description Andy Romeril 2003-03-03 19:29:10 UTC
I have a number of suggestions / tips for the SPARC install guide.

- In Part 1 - Supported Hardware, there is an "Unsupported" section which has an
incomplete sentence regarding the status of X Window System support on this
platform. Please complete or update the thought...

- In Part 2 - Booting, please document the use of the 'Stop-A' key sequence to
access the firmware menu (the "ok" prompt). This is completely obscure to
anyone not previously familiar with Sun hardware and is necessary to prevent the
machine from booting Solaris, if it's installed.

- In Part 2 - Booting, if booting from CD-ROM is the easiest and preferred
method, then it should be listed first.

- Depending on the age of the machine and the CD-ROM drive used, there may be
issues booting from an ISO image that has been written to CD-RW media. I
encountered this on my external Pioneer drive and had to burn a new disc using
CD-R media, which worked like a champ.

- The flow of the document is hard to follow with all of the exceptions to deal
with how the machine was booted and whether you have 'sparc' or 'sparc64'
hardware. Not sure how best to deal with this (split the manual into two
versions?), but thought it worth noting.

- In Part 3 - Installing gentoo, I was unable to get 'dhcpcd eth0' to succeed
until I skipped ahead and executed the statements listed in Code listing 4.1 to
mount the CD-ROM and start up a chroot environment. (Not sure if this is sheer
ignorance on my part or not.)

- To the best of my knowledge, most (all?) Sun machines use SCSI hard drives. If
true, references to hard disk devices in the examples should be changed from
"/dev/hda" to "/dev/sda" type references. (This is also helpful for Linux newbies.)

That's it for now, until I get further with my install.
Thanks,
Andy Romeril

- Part 4 - Set up partitions, needs to borrow more detail from the x86 install guide, especially with respect to a basic partition layout (boot, swap, root, etc.).

- Also in Part 4, some discussion of the Sun disklabel scheme would be welcome, though I cannot offer content for that.

Actually I know that at least the Blade 100's (sparc 64) do have IDE only on the stock machines.

That's about all I have to correct about your suggestions, though :)

reassigning to sparc document dev

These issues should be resolved in the latest doc and install iso. If there are still issues, please reopen the bug.
