VirtualBox required asoundlib.h to run the configuration script without error.
So please add alsa-lib as dependency to this package, please :)

Couldn't confirm this dependency for VirtualBox 1.3.6. Maybe it's specific to 1.3.4.

You are right im talking about VirtualBox 1.3.4. This is the output of configure, when media-libs/alsa-lib is not present:
Checking for ALSA: 
  asound not found at -lasound or asound headers not found
  Check the file configure.log for detailed error information.

!!! ERROR: app-emulation/virtualbox-1.3.4-r1 failed.

there is the same issue with 1.3.6:
alsa-lib is needed to build virtualbox with the alsa audio driver.

a better solution (imho) would be:
add an alsa use and change the related makefile to exclude the alsa driver
(if not needed/selected by the user)
