Description Alberto Ornaghi 2003-03-03 17:10:24 UTC
i've upgraded to xfree 4.3.0 from 4.2.1.
I use xfs to render the fonts, but now I cannot see anymore any bold font.

what the problem could be ?

if I remove the xfs FontPath form XF86Config I can see bold fonts, but they are
ugly and not anti-aliased.

thanks

From what I understand, you need to rebuild your XF86Config file. (X -configure)
Comment 2 Alberto Ornaghi 2003-03-03 17:48:10 UTC
if I do a X -configure the resulting file is configured to NOT use xfs and I get bold fonts... but I want to use xfs...

Comment 3 Luca Barbato gentoo-dev 2003-03-03 18:43:14 UTC
I guess you have to choose between xft and xfs...
Comment 4 Martin Schlemmer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-03-03 23:30:33 UTC
Works fine here with xfs. Do:

  # emerge epm; epm -q freetype fontconfig xft

and paste output from epm.

-------------------------------------------------------
nosferatu root # epm -q freetype fontconfig xft
freetype-1.3.1-r3
freetype-2.1.3-r2
fontconfig-2.1-r1
xft-2.0.1-r1
nosferatu root #
Comment 5 Alberto Ornaghi 2003-03-04 03:49:28 UTC
here it is...

-root- [zefiro] on pts/0 >epm -q freetype fontconfig xft
freetype-2.1.3-r2
freetype-1.3.1-r3
fontconfig-2.1-r1
xft-2.0.1-r1

what is your configuration line for the xfs in XF86Config ?

bye
Comment 6 Alberto Ornaghi 2003-03-04 13:56:36 UTC
the problem persist even if I disable the xfs but I add the

   FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype/"

line to /etc/X11/XF86Config.

any ideas ?

I'm using XFree 4.2.1-r2 and had lost bold fonts. Here's how I got them back.
[1] cd /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype/
[2] ttmkfdir > fonts.scale
[3] cp fonts.scale fonts.dir
I'm not sure if this will help but I thought I'd mention it anyway.
Comment 9 ralf 2003-03-16 18:57:27 UTC
I had lost bold Truetype fonts in XFree86 4.3.0 as well. Following Dhruba Bandopadhyay's suggestions I ran ttmkfdir on the directory, which fixed the problem. Can Alberto Ornaghi please check whether this rectifies his problem as well and report back?
Comment 10 Alberto Ornaghi 2003-03-17 14:34:31 UTC
yes, it works for me...

can this be included in the ebuild process ?

thank you
Comment 11 Martin Schlemmer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-03-18 13:25:41 UTC
It is included. Also done by /etc/init.d/xfs every time something in the font
dirs change.

I have also run into a problem when updating to xfree 4.3.0-r1 and xfs. I've seen it mainly with Open Office. I'm using a binary install of Open Office from openoffice.org. After merging 4.3.0-r1 and all its dependencies and rebuilt the XF86config file as instructed. However, when I go into Open Office Writer and click the font drop down menu only a handfull of the fonts I have show up. The interesting part is if I go into Open Office Calc and click the font drop down it shows all the fonts but then freezes up, xfs dies along with X altogether. Now I can go into Open Office and add the fonts by hand and that seems to work but I've never had to do this before. I'm using 1.4rc3 and not sure if this is exactly related to this Bug but I thought it better to report it here rather than open a new just in case it is.
Comment 13 Narada Sage 2003-03-26 09:05:40 UTC
Perhaps I'm missing the point altogether but bother with xfs at all? I've used X 4.2 and 4.3 with the same XF86Config which has around 14 different FontPath entries and everything has worked fine including OpenOffice. Please note that for the purposes of OpenOffice one can add personal fonts manually by running 'oopadmin' as root which will make those fonts available system wide.
Comment 14 Kurt 2003-03-26 11:21:56 UTC
I agree on a standalone machine that using xfs is really not needed. But I do have systems set as font servers that clients on the network do pull fonts from. This makes it nice because I can install fonts on one machine and then all have access to them over the network, rather than installing them on each machine.
Comment 15 Seemant Kulleen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-04-19 07:59:51 UTC
gentlemen, out of curiosity -- have any of you tried xfree-4.3.0-r2?

and if so, are the issues still pertinent?
Comment 16 Alberto Ornaghi 2003-04-21 12:13:13 UTC
should I remove xft to emerge xfree-4.3.0-r2 ?

I get:

!!! Error: the virtual/xft package conflicts with this package and both can't be installed on the same system together.

thanks
Comment 17 Narada Sage 2003-04-21 12:15:11 UTC
Yes. You should. Read today's GWN.
Comment 18 Alberto Ornaghi 2003-04-27 05:41:26 UTC
everything seems to be ok with 4.3.0-r2
