I just emerged xfree-4.3 last night and I had 85 files to update. All of them were files that I never changed like /etc/X11/xkb/* and other things in /etc/X11 that I deffinatly would want updated for the new X. I would like there to be a option to update all the files at once without having to pick each file, pick 1 to use update, answer yes to overwrite, go on to next file 85 times. yes I could export CONFIG_PROTECT="" before emerging, but I dont know what conf files will be updated before the merge so that could clobber files I dont want changed. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. emerge xfree 2. etc-update 3. hit enter, 1, y, enter 85 times Actual Results: my hand hurt :-) Expected Results: in the menu to pick which file to update offer a option like "press A to use all updates or press S to skip all updates" # emerge info Portage 2.0.46-r12 (default-1.0, gcc-2.95.3, glibc-2.2.5-r2) ================================================================= System uname: 2.4.19-gentoo-r10b i686 AMD Athlon(tm) processor GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://linux.oit.umass.edu/gentoo/gentoo http://csociety-ftp.ecn.purdue.edu/pub/gentoo/ http://gentoo.oregonstate.edu http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /var/qmail/control /usr/share/config /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/env.d" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="" USE="x86 oss 3dnow apm avi crypt cups jpeg libg++ mikmod mmx mpeg ncurses pdflib quicktime spell truetype xml2 xmms xv berkdb bonobo cdr directfb esd gdbm gif gnome gnome-libs gpm gtk gtkhtml guile imlib libwww motif mozilla mysql nls oggvorbis opengl pam perl png python readline sdl slang snmp ssl svga tcltk tcpd tiff X -kde -qt -arts -java dvd encode gtk2" COMPILER="" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=i686 -O3 -pipe" CXXFLAGS="-march=i686 -O3 -pipe" ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86 ~x86" MAKEOPTS="-j2" AUTOCLEAN="yes" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" FEATURES="sandbox ccache"
CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/X11/xkb" etc-update that'll merge all the files for you
or you could try dispatch-conf
I just tried dispatch-conf after emergeing snort and I didn't see any option to supercede all. I sitll have to hit q then s for each file. It's less keypresses than etc-update but I still have to do through each file. I ended up exporting CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK like SpanKY said.
Done and Done. fixed in cvs for 47-r9
