Description Markus Poeschl 2007-02-07 19:29:15 UTC
This error I saw the first time on kernel 2.6.19-gentoo-r5 in dmesg when starting xdm. Before I used kernel 2.6.18-gentoo-r6.

[drm:via_mem_alloc] *ERROR* Attempt to allocate from uninitialized memory manager.

No kernel settings where changed on the upgrade, except for new kernel parameters. All kernel functions are built into the kernel.

Reproducible: Always

Actual Results:
Some strange effects on X desktop.

Platform: VIA EPIA PD-10000, CPU VIA C3
Desktop: gnome
X org driver: via (package: x11-drivers/xf86-video-via)
Comment 1 Joshua Baergen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-02-08 01:09:10 UTC
Please attach your emerge --info and what version of xf86-video-via you are running.
Comment 2 Markus Poeschl 2007-02-08 06:45:30 UTC
The version of the via driver is x11-drivers/xf86-video-via-0.2.1-r1.
And that's the result of emerge --info:

Portage 2.1.1-r2 (default-linux/x86/2006.1/desktop, gcc-4.1.1, glibc-2.5-r0, 2.6.19-gentoo-r5 i686)

Try the 0.2.2 version of the driver, currently in ~.

The error message in dmesg is gone but system becomes instable.

Xorg log for via unichrome graphics

No error is displayed in xorg log, only in dmesg a memory manager error is reported.
Comment 8 Markus Poeschl 2007-02-12 20:35:18 UTC
I forgot to write that the last Xorg.0.log was produced with
x11-drivers/xf86-video-via-0.2.1-r1 (not 0.2.2)!
Comment 9 Anton S. Ustyuzhanin 2007-02-21 03:48:04 UTC
Markus Poeschl, do you have mplayer or xine using Xv work? I have the same problem, and also Xv not working. My platform is this thin client: http://www.holit.ua/ru/products/comp/board/PCThink/2480.html
Now i will try to xorg-x11-7.2 and xf86-video-via-0.2.2, and post results.
Comment 10 Anton S. Ustyuzhanin 2007-02-21 06:03:40 UTC
No effect. :( Xv still does'n work.
I attached my xorg.conf, Xorg.log, mplayer output and xine's bugreport.

I'm using xine with enabled xv on my computer. But with the new kernel and via driver 0.2.2 my computer crashed totally after few seconds.
Good luck with the new version of xorg and via driver. I'm very interested on your results.
Markus

The same result. Doesn't want to work.

This should move upstream. Please find/file a bug at https://bugs.freedesktop.org and post the resulting link here. Thanks!

An update didn't change anything. Note that this error occurs only in combination with kernel 2.6.19!

If this problem still occurs with 2.6.20, file a bug upstream and they can look into it.
Comment 18 Markus Poeschl 2007-05-15 13:17:50 UTC
Solved with current version!
Comment 19 Joshua Baergen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-05-16 22:45:01 UTC
Re-opening for proper solution.
Comment 20 Joshua Baergen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-05-16 22:45:48 UTC
Fixed with kernel 2.6.20 or 2.6.21 (Markus, could you specify which, please?).
