checking dynamic linker characteristics... GNU/Linux ld.so
checking how to hardcode library paths into programs... immediate
appending configuration tag "F77" to libtool
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking for perl... /usr/bin/perl
checking for XML::Parser... configure: error: XML::Parser perl module is required for intltool

Works with dev-perl/XML-Parser installed and I don't have dev-util/intltool.

I'm having a similar problem but I already have dev-perl/XML-Parser installed. I looked at the configure script and told it to echo the command it was using to check for the package and I got this:

checking for XML::Parser... Can't locate XML/Parser.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /etc/perl /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.8/i686-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.8 /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8/i686-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8/i686-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8 /usr/local/lib/site_perl .) at -e line 1.

configure: error: XML::Parser perl module is required for intltool

Here are the paths on my system to XML::Parser:

# locate Parser.pm
/usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8/Pod/Parser.pm
/usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.8/Pod/Parser.pm
/usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.8/i386-linux/XML/Parser.pm

Comment 2 Matthew Schultz 2007-02-23 15:54:59 UTC
Here's something strange. The gaim configure script was running this command to check to see if XML::Parser exists:

/usr/bin/perl -e "require XML::Parser"

I ran that command from the shell prompt and it didn't echo anything basically meaning it had found it. Then I ran the configure script for gaim again and this time it found it. I then ran emerge on the gaim package and it installed fine.
Comment 3 Olivier Crete (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-05-01 03:39:52 UTC
ok, I added the build time dependency to net-im/pidgin (the successor of gaim).
