Do you have a .bittorrent dir in your home? Try removing it and trying again. Does net-p2p/bittornado works for you? And what about bittorrent 4.4.0?
I already removed the ~/.bittorrent and even tried to launch the app as root. Always the same error. I don't know if 5.0.4 was working since it was only installed like for 10 days and I don't remember if I launched the app in those days but what I can say for sure is that 5.0.3 runned smoothly after having recompiled wxGTK and wxpython with +unicode (4.x was running without the unicode useflag). Is it cruicila to find out about bittornado? I don't plan to install it if it's not really necessary to track the bug I'm facing.

If you try bittornado we can see if it's something related to bittorrent or maybe to wxpython/wxGTK. You can install bittorrent 5.0.4: emerge -av =bittorrent-5.0.4 You can also install bittorrent-5.0.3, just copy the ebuild in the /usr/portage/net-p2p/bittorrent dir and run "emerge -av --digest =bittorrent-5.0.3"
btdownloadgui.py works. I just tried bittorrent-5.0.3 and it fails with the same error message. Something "external" must have broken the system since I'm sure that 5.0.3 was working and there was no merge of wx{GTK,python} in the meantime. Let me know how I can further help to debug this. Thanks!

Remerging wxGTK was enough. bittorrent-5.0.5 is running again. Interesting would be what action caused the breakage of wxGTK. Thanks a lot! If I can be of further help, let me know.
