One of the patches introduced between networkmanager-0.6.4_pre20061028 and networkmanager-0.6.4_pre20061028-r1 (I guess it would be networkmanager-updatedbackend.patch) seems to cause NetworkManager to change the hostname when a network interface gets connected. Problem is, if X originally started with one hostname (like localhost.localdomain) and the hostname suddenly changes to something else, the X server starts to refuse any new connections and the user can't open any new windows. Which is not good. The only workaround, currently, seems to be to switch to console, run "hostname originalhostname" and switch back. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Start X with no network interfaces connected, with a hostname of "localhost". 2. Use NM to connect to an interface where the IP has a hostname not "localhost". 3. Attempt to open any new X window. Actual Results: Nothing opens; X refuses connection because of mismatched hostnames. Expected Results: Window should open. steev@sigma ~ % cat /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf send host-name "sigma"; supersede host-name "sigma"; works for me to keep it. This will happen on any dhcp server that sends you a hostname. you should replace sigma in the above to whatever your hostname is.
Did that help Adrian?
(In reply to comment #2) > Did that help Adrian? I'm afraid I'm currently running Ubuntu and not Gentoo; but as far as I can recall that did in fact fix my problem when I was still on Gentoo. Thanks!
