Description Joel Palmius 2003-02-27 06:04:05 UTC
I have installed gentoo/x86 following the installation steps provided on the
home page. I used the rc2 cd to boot up and repartition, but unpacked the latest
stage1 tarball (stage1-x86-1.4_pre20030220.tar.bz2) instead of using the one on
the CD.

In first run I did not change make.conf at all, leaving everything at default
setting. In second attempt I USEd "doc java apache2 -alsa" and "-march=athlon-xp
-O3 -pipe". The result did not differ between the two attempts. I repartitioned
between the attempts.

Everything works fine during installation. After reboot, kernel awakes as
expected, and the various init scrips run nicely. However, after "running local"
has been printed, nothing more happens. No login prompt appearc, ctrl-c / d / z
does nothing. Alt+F1-F12 works but other consoles are blank.

The host system is Mandrake 9.0 with VMware 3.2.0 (build 2230).

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Boot up with rc2 cd, but unpack latest stage1 tarball
2.Install system (in VMware linux/linux) using installation instructions
3.Reboot system

Actual Results:
All startup steps are printed, but nothing happens after "running local" is printed.

Expected Results:
I want to see a login prompt at this time.

I tried to find where, more exactly, the script locked up. Having added "echo
hello" on the last line in /sbin/rc, "hello" is indeed printed after "running
local" (thus there is not anything in the "local" script with hangs stuff).

Sorry.. "running local" should have been "starting local"

The problem does not persist with rc3. I do not think I did anything differently during the installation, but with rc3 I got a login prompt.

works with rc3, as per previous comment. Closing.
