Description Michael Lee Yohe 2007-01-26 15:44:07 UTC
I have noticed every since I went to a dual monitor setup (separate X servers - no Xinerama), that occasionally, the kdesktop_lock process seems to fork itself over an infinite number of times. Visually, it looks as if the password entry dialog box is redraws over and over (rapidly). If I can login from a remote machine, I see from top that kslideshow.kss is filling up the process listing quickly. This happens until the OOM condition (which on this machine is 3GB of RAM and 1.6G of swap) - which kills the biggest memory hog allowing kslideshow.kss to continue to forking once again.

The only way to solve the problem is to catch it before the OOM condition where sshd let's me login remotely, and to issue a "killall -9 kslideshow.kss; killall -9 kdesktop_lock".

This does not happen all the time. It seems to occur more frequently if I execute the lock screen on the Screen 1 (as opposed to Screen 0). I have had this happen with other screensavers, so I do not think it is intrinsic to kslideshow.kss.

kdesktop_lock seems to be spawning itself (over and over again).

Comment 6 Diego Elio Pettenò (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-01-29 21:16:04 UTC
Please try again after removing xeffects overlay and rebuilding your whole KDE package set. That overlay is known to patch and break many ebuilds, kdesktop included.
Comment 7 Michael Lee Yohe 2007-01-29 23:17:33 UTC
This happens even without the overlay. I've been dealing with this problem for a while, but had neglected to file a bug.
Comment 8 Caleb Tennis (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-02-07 19:31:19 UTC
It might be worthwhile to file a bug at bugs.kde.org, so the kde developers can take a stab at this one.
