I have tried projectM with both XMMS (hand built), and both audacious (from portage). Output looks totally the same in both cases, with the same stability problems. There are no kaleidoscope-like background effects, and it seems the background is not refreshed at all. When I pull other windows over the projectM window, the contents of the window pulled over it appear mirrored. This trash also remains there, as there is no background refresh. No drawing into the background at all. (This particular strangeness doesn't happen with the Composite X extension turned on, but in that case, strange black polygons appear time to time, blocking parts of the window.) The effect of all this is that projectM looks UGLY! (Which, in case of a visplugin, means unusability.) Another strangeness is that projectM always segfaults at the same preset: loading preset from '/usr/share/projectM/presets/Eo.S.+Phat Cool Bug_arm.milk' Segmentation fault I have tried several settings in the projectm config file, but these don't affect the error. I have x.org-7.2 installed, but this error was the same with x.org-7.0 too. I have nvidia-drivers-1.0.9746 installed, but the error was present with nvidia-drivers-1.0.8776 too. LibSDL version is libsdl-1.2.11-r1 (but the error was present with libsdl-1.2.11 too). My video card is a Quadro FX 4000, and the processor is a dual core AMD Opteron. Sorry, it seems the part about pulling windows over the projectM window isn't clear enough. If I pull, say, a dialog window over the bottom of it, the dialog window itself won't get mirrored, but as if the projectM window was a mirror, the dialog window appears upside-down on the top of it. And even after I pull the dialog window away, this mirrored trash remains there in the background.
The comments in the audacious 1.3.0 developer release alphas are very clear. Report your bugs in the upstream tracker, for your convenience it has been linked in the URL field of this bug. Test alpha3 as alpha2 is now outdated and no longer supported. If you would like end-user support, downgrade to the audacious 1.2 series (core 1.2.2 with plugins 1.2.5). XMMS is not in the portage tree, do not ask for support on obsolete software.
