If I try to start X with the ATI fglrx driver the System hangs completely. No logs, no nothing, only cold boot helps. I was trying many ways to solve this without effort. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. changing xorg.conf to use fglrx driver 2. startx Actual Results: hangs system. uname -a: Linux athom 2.6.19-gentoo-r4 #10 SMP PREEMPT Sat Jan 20 21:01:11 CET 2007 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux emerge --info: Portage 2.1.2-r1 (default-linux/amd64/2006.1, gcc-4.1.1, glibc-2.5-r0, 2.6.19-gentoo-r4 x86_64) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.19-gentoo-r4 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+ Gentoo Base System version 1.12.9 Timestamp of tree: Fri, 19 Jan 2007 21:50:01 +0000 ccache version 2.4 [enabled] dev-java/java-config: 1.3.7, 2.0.31-r3 dev-lang/python: 2.4.4 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r5 dev-util/ccache: 2.4-r6 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.18.1 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.61 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2, 1.10 sys-devel/binutils: 2.17 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.3.14 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.22 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.19.2-r1 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64 x86 ~amd64 ~x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=athlon64 -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -mmmx -m3dnow -msse -msse2" CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/3.5/env /usr/kde/3.5/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/shutdown /usr/share/X11/xkb /usr/share/config" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/env.d /etc/env.d/java/ /etc/gconf /etc/java-config/vms/ /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/splash /etc/terminfo" CXXFLAGS="-march=athlon64 -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -mmmx -m3dnow -msse -msse2" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig ccache distlocks metadata-transfer parallel-fetch sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://gentoo.inf.elte.hu/ ftp://ftp.nyx.hu/gentoo " LANG="hu_HU.UTF-8" LC_ALL="hu_HU.UTF-8" LINGUAS="hu en de" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --delete-after --stats --timeout=180 --exclude=/distfiles --exclude=/local --exclude=/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.europe.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="X acpi alsa amd64 berkdb bitmap-fonts cdr cli cracklib crypt cups dbus dga dio dlloader dmi dri dvd dvdr exif fortran gcj gdbm gnome gpm gtk hal iconv id3 ipv6 isdnlog java javascript jpeg libg++ mp3 ncurses nls nptl nptlonly nsplugin objc opengl oss pam pcre perl ppds pppd python readline reflection session slang spl ssl tcpd truetype-fonts type1-fonts udev unicode userlocales xorg zlib" ALSA_CARDS="ali5451 als4000 atiixp atiixp-modem bt87x ca0106 cmipci emu10k1x ens1370 ens1371 es1938 es1968 fm801 hda-intel intel8x0 intel8x0m maestro3 trident usb-audio via82xx via82xx-modem ymfpci" ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS="adpcm alaw asym copy dmix dshare dsnoop empty extplug file hooks iec958 ioplug ladspa lfloat linear meter mulaw multi null plug rate route share shm softvol" ELIBC="glibc" INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse evdev" KERNEL="linux" LCD_DEVICES="bayrad cfontz cfontz633 glk hd44780 lb216 lcdm001 mtxorb ncurses text" LINGUAS="hu en de" USERLAND="GNU" VIDEO_CARDS="fglrx radeon vesa vga" Unset: CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, INSTALL_MASK, LDFLAGS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS I have recently changed CFLAGS and added some useflags...
Created attachment 107849 [details] xorg.conf Using Device1 works fine, using Device0 hangs system. (I would like to have direct rendering...)
I forgot to mention: at-drivers tried: 8.32.5, 8.30.3-r1 even from ati the 8.33.6 Xorg 7.1
Maybe if you could enlighten us how on earth are we supposed to debug your issue without any information whatsoever...
(In reply to comment #3) > Maybe if you could enlighten us how on earth are we supposed to debug your > issue without any information whatsoever... > Good point. :) I don't know what information I should provide. Please ask me!
Well, unless there's something in the logs (/var/log/messages, Xorg.log) then there's nothing we could, sorry. Take this issue to ATI unless you are able to provide something.
Created attachment 107889 [details] /var/log/Xorg.0.log I have compiled a kernel without framebuffer and EDID and managed at least to produce an Xorg.0.log The screen was messed up after startx, switch to console didn't work, but ctrl+alt+del made the system to reboot.
I could provide an Xorg.0.log Is there something usable?
No, not really. Anyway, this is not a support forum for proprietary stuff, sorry.
Thanks anyway. ATI sucks...
