Description D. Zl. 2007-01-22 04:25:49 UTC
There are two issues, that are either related to the fwcutter, the driver it uses or the Generic IEEE stack implementation in the kernel.

1. Whenever the module bcm43xx is loaded, my synaptics touchpad loses its capabilities under X (scrolling, sensitivity, etc). rmmod bcm43xx fixes the issue.

2. Whenever the bcm43xx scans for wireless networks, the touchpad goes out of sync as reported by psmouse.c.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
No specific steps to reproduce the problem, this is a hardware compatibility issue. I have bcm43xx-fwcutter 005 installed and use the 3.130.20 wl_apsta.o driver.

This driver interferes with the synaptics touchpad on my Compaq Presario V5000Z. This is probably not an issue with different laptops. This laptop may have slightly modified hardware.

Here's what I get every time my Broadcom 4318 is scanning

SoftMAC: Scanning 14 channels
psmouse.c: TouchPad at isa0060/serio4/input0 lost sync at byte 1
psmouse.c: TouchPad at isa0060/serio4/input0 lost sync at byte 1
psmouse.c: TouchPad at isa0060/serio4/input0 lost sync at byte 1
psmouse.c: TouchPad at isa0060/serio4/input0 lost sync at byte 1
psmouse.c: TouchPad at isa0060/serio4/input0 lost sync at byte 1
psmouse.c: issuing reconnect request
SoftMAC: Scanning finished

I'm using vanilla sources 2.6.19.1 right now but I get the same problem with gentoo-sources and suspend2-sources all the way from 2.6.16.

This is not related to fwcutter, it's at best a kernel bug. Since the bcm43xx driver is under heavy development, try a newer kernel, ACPI off, etc. You could try emailing the bcm43xx development list, but they will tell you to at least try a newer kernel first.
