I had reported problems installing gentoo in bug 16087. I rebuilt a kernel from the "stable" gentoo kernel sources (2.4.19-r10) and had ide resets and timeouts. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Build kernel based on gentoo-kernel-2.4.19-r10 2. Boot off of an HPT 372 ide controller 3. Watch it sputter and choke Actual Results: Failed to boot, made a lot of noise about ide unhappyness. Expected Results: Succeeded in boot process, not cough up ide timeouts and resets. I am happy and eager to test newer kernels. From what I gather xfs-2.4.20_pre6 is expected to work. I will try that.
2.4.20-xfs-pre6 is working fine.
Then stick to xfs-sources. They have the updated IDE core for better hardware compatibility. The next gentoo-sources may be getting this patch, if and when I incorporate it into lolo-sources, I will post here about it.
gs-sources or any 2.4.21_pre4+ should have adequate support for this chipset also
