As I said before, please try compiling with "-O2 -march=<....>" ONLY and report back if it still fails. Thanks, Markus
Looks like that this bug CFLAGS/CXXFLAGS related only... blas can be compilled with -O2 -march=<cpu> -mtune=<cpu> but not with -O3
I don't think -O3 is the problem (it works fine for me on a large number of different boxes). I suspect the cullprit is "-ftree-vectorize".
Fails for me on amd64 too, but for another reason I think..: . . . x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-strip --strip-debug /usr/portage/tmp/portage/sci-libs/blas-atlas-3.7.24/work/ATLAS/gentoo-build/gentoo/libs/libatlas.a chmod 644 /usr/portage/tmp/portage/sci-libs/blas-atlas-3.7.24/work/ATLAS/gentoo-build/gentoo/libs/libatlas.a x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-ranlib /usr/portage/tmp/portage/sci-libs/blas-atlas-3.7.24/work/ATLAS/gentoo-build/gentoo/libs/libatlas.a libtool: install: warning: remember to run `libtool --finish /usr/lib' cd gentoo/libf77blas.a ; \ libtool --mode=link --tag=CC cc -lpthread -lgfortran -o libblas.la ../libs/libatlas.la *.lo -rpath /usr/lib64/blas/atlas; \ rm -f .libs/libblas.so.0.0.0; \ cc --shared .libs/*.o -lpthread -lgfortran /usr/portage/tmp/portage/sci-libs/blas-atlas-3.7.24/work/ATLAS/gentoo-build/gentoo/libs/libatlas.so -Wl,-soname -Wl,libblas.so.0 -o .libs/libblas.so.0.0.0; \ libtool --mode=install install -s libblas.la /usr/portage/tmp/portage/sci-libs/blas-atlas-3.7.24/work/ATLAS/gentoo-build/gentoo/libs /bin/sh: line 0: cd: gentoo/libf77blas.a: No such file or directory libtool: link: `*.lo' is not a valid libtool object gcc: .libs/*.o: No such file or directory libtool: install: `libblas.la' is not a valid libtool archive Try `libtool --help --mode=install' for more information. make[1]: *** [libblas.so] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/portage/tmp/portage/sci-libs/blas-atlas-3.7.24/work/ATLAS/gentoo-build' make: *** [shared-strip] Error 2 !!! (In reply to comment #11) > Fails for me on amd64 too, but for another reason I think..: > . Yes, different reason:) I suspect there was some timing issue somewhere in between and atlas' build system failed to terminate and happily continued compiling with some of the libs now missing. I'd need to see the complete captured output of the emerge up to this point if possible. Since this might be a pretty large file, is there a chance you could post it somewhere? Thanks, Markus
Thanks for taking a look at this Markus. The log is about 20mb and I've uploaded it here: http://www.acc.umu.se/~cm/sci-libs:blas-atlas-3.7.24:20070126-081423.log If you're on a slow connection I can zip it. Thanks, Claes
Hi Claes, Thanks for the output! I grepped through it and it looks like the following is relevant. -------------- SNIP ----------------------------------- FATAL: can't create .libs/: Is a directory make[5]: *** [ATL_zreftrmvUNU.o] Error 1 make[5]: Leaving directory `/usr/portage/tmp/portage/sci-libs/blas-atlas-3.7.24/work/ATLAS/gentoo-build/src/blas/reference/level2' make[4]: *** [zrefblas2] Error 2 ------------------------------------------------------- Unfortunately, I am not quite sure what causes this. Assuming you have enough space on your disk could you try compiling it with "-j1" and see if that helps. Also, your output indicates that your machine has some sort of CPU throttling enabled. In this case atlas can not do a very good job of optimizing and you may obtain a very badly optimized library. Please turn throttling off during blas-atlas compilation. cheers, Markus
Thanks a lot for the input. I've changed to the Performance Speed Governor and set -j1, recompiling now. I'll see what happens, but I guess it will take a few hours. /Claes
No success with -j1, unfortunately. It fails in the exact same place. I'm guessing that the log is almost identical, but if you care to look you can find it at: http://www.acc.umu.se/~cm/sci-libs:blas-atlas-3.7.24:20070127-160733.log Maybe some of my use-flags are broken, or my filesysytem. I can't really figure it out.. :-/ Regards, Claes
I don't think the error is related to your use flags and/or filesystem but probably some problem with blas-atlas' build system. Hard to say from the logs. Does the stable version compile for you!? cheers, Markus
I just retried with blas-atlas-3.7.11 and the same make.conf: . . . /bin/sh: line 0: cd: gentoo/libf77blas.a: No such file or directory libtool: link: `*.lo' is not a valid libtool object gcc: .libs/*.o: No such file or directory libtool: install: `libblas.la' is not a valid libtool archive Try `libtool --help --mode=install' for more information. make[1]: *** [libblas.so] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/portage/tmp/portage/sci-libs/blas-atlas-3.7.11/work/ATLAS' make: *** [shared-strip] Error 2 !!! Could you maybe try without ccache, just to rule that out as well. Thanks, Markus
Hey, sorry for the slow reply. Did a recompile without ccache and it still fails in exactly the same way. gcc: .libs/*.o: No such file or directory libtool: install: `libblas.la' is not a valid libtool archive Try `libtool --help --mode=install' for more information. make[1]: *** [libblas.so] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/portage/tmp/portage/sci-libs/blas-atlas-3.7.24/work/ATLAS/gentoo-build' make: *** [shared-strip] Error 2 !!! After staring at this for some more it actually looks as if libtool is choking when creating ATL_cgemvNc_b1.o, since it compiles the pic objects via -o .libs/ instead of -o .libs/ATL_cgemvNc_b1.o which obviously fails. Why this happens I don't know. What version of libtool do you have installed? Could you possibly try re-emerging libtool and try again!? Thanks, Markus
I have libtool-1.5.22 installed. Just re-emerged it, then did a revdep-rebuild again, which didn't update anything. I'll restart a blas-atlas build now. If it fails, maybe I should try with -fPIC or so. Thank you :-)
Hey, getting somewhere. It fails at another point now. Really wonder what was wrong with libtools. Hmm.. Or maybe not recompile with that.. Why is it trying to do "mkdir: /.libs" Feels like it should be ./libs Anyway, I'll look on it on sunday.
Yeah, it looks like libtool is doing something weird and better not turn off the sandbox :) Your logs show that this time gentoo/libf77blas.a is properly created but libtool chokes once and tries creating /.libs instead of ./libs. Quite strange and I am not sure what causes this. Markus

Make sure that you have CPU throttling disabled and try keeping the CPU load low while emerging atlas and simply try again a few more time. This has occasionally happened to me in the past as well. Best, Markus
Finally got blas-atlas to install but I still don't know what the problem was. I sync:ed and updated everything, then compiled a new kernel and rebooted. Tried again and now it worked. (Unfortunately I forgot to turn off the dynamic cpu-throtling). Anyway, thanks for looking at this before! /Claes
Hi Claes, Great! Something on your system was messed up and probably fixed itself after syncing and updating. Please don't forget to re-compile blas-atlas without CPU throttling, otherwise you're likely stuck with badly optimized blas libraries. I'll close this bug since all of the issues reported seem to be addressed from my point of view. Thanks, Markus
